What is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is preschool program recently adopted by school districts as a school readiness program for children that miss the age cutoff to attend Kindergarten. Many TK programs are half-day programs within the school district. At Busy Bee, our all-day TK program uses a play-based approach focused on social and emotional development to get our 4 and 5-year olds ready for Kindergarten.
What does Busy Bee’s TK Program look like?
Busy Bee has had what is now known as a TK Program for well over 50 years! Children in our TK program practice self-regulation, problem solving, conflict resolution and social-emotional skills all through a play-based curriculum. Our “I am! I can!” philosophy ensures that by the time children leave Busy Bee, they have learned:
- Self-help skills such as putting on their own jackets, buttoning and zipping their own clothes, and serving themselves at mealtimes
- Peer relationships including conflict resolution, problem solving, and how to enter play situations
- Emotional development such as empathy, labeling feelings, and recognizing how to express those feelings in a constructive way
- Basic language and literacy functions of how to hold a pencil, reciprocally communicate and recognize symbols in print
How is Busy Bee’s TK Program different?
Our TK program at Busy Bee is a full-day program that includes early drop off and late pick up (7am – 5:45pm). We also provide a nutritious home-cooked breakfast, lunch, and three snacks throughout the day. Our classroom sizes and teacher-to-child ratios are smaller than school district run TK programs, with 1 or more qualified teachers for every 12 children.
Our program also includes many opportunities for other important areas of development:
- Gymnastics – Ms. Kathy from Gymagery offers weekly robust gross motor movement sessions for all classrooms
- 1500 sq. ft. playground with lots of outside play time, rain or shine!
- Show and Tell Fridays – teaches public speaking skills, confidence and self-esteem
- Walking Field Trips – we take advantage of all the culture that Midtown has to offer! In the past we have taken walking trips to Suzie’s Burger, the Post Office and Sutter’s Fort
What else should I know about Busy Bee TK?
Busy Bee is licensed as a child care center through the state of California, therefore we follow strict health and safety regulations set by Title 22. We offer a two-hour rest period for all children where they can nap or rest their bodies after lunch. Our TK classroom also includes an attached bathroom and our staff is trained to assist with potty-training if your child is not quite there yet.
THE BEARS
This special classroom, exclusively offered at our 27th Street location, opens up from May through August every year and is geared towards the oldest children in our program to provide them a higher-level educational curriculum before they go off to Kindergarten.
